Being a socially reclined creature, communication is one of the basic requirements of human nature. The internet has converted the whole world into one global village. The mankind has embraced Social Media Platforms which facilitates them to connect with one another. These virtual communication platforms like Facebook has not only expedited, but also revolutionized the manner in which we interact and create social bonds.

The number of Social Media Users has increased in leaps and bounds in the past few years and their pervasiveness is apparent from the ever growing statistical report of population of smart phone users. With the easy and affordable access of internet, the Social Media users in India surged up to 326.1 million in the year 2018 which is expected to reach up to 448 million by the year 2023 according to a report on Social media usage in India - Statistics & Facts. 

SNSs have become inevitable and integral part of the lives of the college going students. The young people use SNSs for various reasons and the emergence of new types of such platforms with more advance features has further catalysed its usage. Google owned Orkut was the first popular Social Networking Site of India which reigned from the year 2008 to 2014. The trend of virtual socializing started making place in the hearts of Indians at an accelerated pace and by the year 2018, India had highest number of Facebook users i.e. almost 300 million.

The List of popular SNSs across the world has exceeded 250 by the beginning of the year 2019 and keeps growing. Though Facebook continues to dominate the domain of SNSs, other sites like TikTok, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube are also paving their way through the hearts of internet consumers. With about 500 million users, TikTok has been reported as the fastest growing social network site in the year 2019.

There can be number of gratifications derived by people that may range from Identity Creation to peer acceptance. An average student spends about 30 minute to 2 hours on Facebook every day. In the present scenario of communication explosion, SNS’s high and compulsive usage has directly led to psychological distress, lower quality of life, and reduced subjective wellbeing amongst the youth. Many people disapprove social media for cultivating the habit of Sexting and antisocial behavior among youth in the actual world.
