Sustainable Design Practice: Need of the Hour!
The word 'sustainability' is the talk of the town! Be it Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set in 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly, intended to be achieved by the year 2030 or projects related to Sustainable Fashion & Craft, from a Designer's Creative Perspective at the College Level! As a Lifestyle & Accessories Designer, I feel we designers carry a certain added responsibility in the Design Practice. This practice is not only limited to focus on judicious use of resources and enter into a circular economy for the sake of saving resources, but rather practicing sustainability in respective design disciplines also opens door for practicing craft and diving into the processes at an individual level with a literal hands on experience.
"Getting work done by team!", "Focusing on Smart Work!", "Finding Karigar Bhaiyas for the Final Product Development", to me sound a bygone era! Today is the time to walk hand in hand with “the” team, with “the” karigar bhaiya and work with hands on experience together, so as to create designs and product, not only for a commercial value but also for the sake of precious element of sustainability attached to it.

Hence, workshops on "Sustainable Fashion Jewellery", has been one such experience, which does not focus on making aesthetically rich products, but rather instills an emotion and confidence to develop unique pieces of art through own hands, without depending on machines or human work force. It also inspires young designers to look into the environment and utilize existing resources to create "best out of waste" at 0% cost! Some techniques of, Cloth Stuffing, Running Stitch, Paper Rolling, Braiding & Paper Folding have been important techniques, taught in the workshop. I am sure such design practice will not only be an added exercise to the curriculum, rather be an escape for young a designer which also proves to be therapy in times of distress!
